The Uptown Exchange student newspaper at Truman College welcomes you to chat with working communications specialists on a variety of topics, including how to pursue stories for publication and broadcast. Join high-caliber media professionals visiting our school to share with the next generation of journalists-in-training.

All sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays, 2 to 3 p.m., in Truman’s main building, Room #2913:

September 29 — Producer LARRY DUNCAN helped found Labor Beat in 1983 and started shooting video for broadcast on the Chicago Access Network in the ’80s. Affiliated with the radio program Labor Express, Duncan’s video show bills itself as “Independent Rank-and-File Media,” broadcasting in eight cities around the Midwest and the eastern U.S. Duncan will talk about how his interests in documentary film and the Chicago labor movement developed into a cable news show that has completed more than 600 episodes of documenting international labor and union trends. He will also discuss media critique and what mainstream news misses.

October 27 — A journalist currently writing for the Washington Post, the Guardian, and the Chicago Tribune, among other publications, Loyola University alum MARK GUARINO has covered everything from breaking news to politics to the world’s greatest bands. He is also a staff writer for the prestigious Christian Science Monitor, covering the Midwest as well as national news and analysis, and a prolific playwright. Guarino will talk about his education and experience as a reporter, plus his most recent work.

November 24 — Raised in Uptown by an African-American mother and Nigerian father, ADESHINA OLUWATOYIN EMMANUEL reports for Chicago’s premier investigative news publication, the Chicago Reporter, that covers race, poverty, and income inequality. He has also reported and produced for DNA Info Chicago, covering Uptown and Andersonville. Before that, he served a fellowship for the New York Times and has been an affiliated reporter/intern at the Chicago Sun-Times and the Catholic News Service. Emmanuel will share with students what Uptown taught him and how he decided to pursue journalism.

December 8 — SCOTT BRIGHAM leads Truman’s marketing and public-relations team and maintains community and press communications. He also writes Truman’s official college newsletter on happenings around campus. He’ll talk about the career path that led him to City Colleges as a creative communications professional and how students can pursue their own goals in the related fields of journalism, public relations, and marketing.
